The North East market town of Stockton on Tees lies on the border between North Yorkshire and County Durham. Since the decline of heavy industry in the area in the last two decades, the town now makes much of its income through the service industries and tourism.
Stockton's attractive Georgian high street, thought to be the widest of its kind in England, is home to many charming shops and cafes and has a friendly, bustling atmosphere. Other, more modern shopping areas of the town offer a wide range of popular high street retail names and there is a number of excellent restaurants in central Stockton too.
The town has been extensively regenerated in recent years, with modern office developments and showpiece landmarks springing up around Stockton's streets and riverside area, the most striking of these being the sweeping curves of the Teesquay Millennium Bridge.
